As a collage artist I don’t believe in coincidences. So it was probably more of a nudge in the right direction when Bernd brought the round cheese boxes into the studio and said, “Maybe you can do something with these.” At first, I wasn’t interested—the clear horizontal and vertical boundaries within which I was used to organizing the chaos of the image fragments flooding in were all too familiar. Then I decided to give it a try after all—and I haven’t stopped since. It’s as if the round shape has unleashed a completely different kind of flow. Less structure, more circular, pulsating movement—more challenging compositionally, but very lively.
